Is snoozing actually bad for you? Less than you were told
In the one lab study that measured it, half an hour of snoozing cost six minutes of sleep and little else. The tap habit is the real cost, and it has a fix.

You hit snooze twice this morning, maybe three times, and you have heard that this is doing you real damage. Every tap makes you groggier, the story goes, and the extra dozing does not count as sleep. We went looking for the evidence behind that, and the best study we could find says something closer to the opposite.
The study that put snoozers in a lab
In 2023, Tina Sundelin, Shane Landry and John Axelsson published "Is snoozing losing?" in the Journal of Sleep Research. It has two parts.
The first is a survey of 1,732 adults. About 69 percent said they snoozed or set multiple alarms at least sometimes. Snoozers skewed younger and toward evening types, and the reason they gave most often was feeling too tired to get up when the alarm rang.
The second part put 31 habitual snoozers in a sleep lab twice, both mornings ending at the same final wake time. On one, the first alarm rang half an hour early and they snoozed through the gap. On the other, a single alarm woke them at the end.
Snoozing cost about six minutes of sleep. It did not clearly change cortisol on waking, self-rated sleepiness, mood, or the structure of the night's sleep. In the snooze condition, the final alarm did not catch anyone in slow-wave sleep. That is the deep stage, and Tassi and Muzet's review of sleep inertia ties waking from it to the worst grogginess. On cognitive tests right after waking, the snoozers did slightly better or the same. The authors' own summary is that there is no reason to stop snoozing if you enjoy it, at least for periods around 30 minutes.
That is one study with 31 people, and we will come back to its limits. But it measured instead of assumed, and it does not support the idea that snoozing wrecks your morning.
Why that result does not transfer to your bedroom
The lab snoozers set an alarm 30 minutes earlier than they needed, dozed between rings, and got up at the last one. Every time. The final wake time did not move, and a researcher was in the building.
Now look at snoozing at home. You set the alarm for the last possible minute. The first tap pushes you past it. The second tap costs you breakfast. The "final" alarm is another button, identical to the ones before it, and the hand that stops it belongs to someone who is not awake yet. We wrote about that person in the last post. The first minutes after an alarm are sleep inertia, which Tassi and Muzet put at anywhere from a minute to half an hour, and decisions made inside it are not really decisions.
The study measured a snooze with a hard stop. Most people run a snooze with a soft stop, and that is where the damage happens. In the lab, that moment never came.
Two costs it measured and one it could not
The first is those six minutes. Half an hour on the clock bought about 24 minutes of interrupted sleep. That is the trade when you set the alarm early on purpose. A few minutes and some continuity, in exchange for a softer landing and a lower chance that the alarm yanks you out of deep sleep. If you do not care about the soft landing, the same half hour is worth more asleep.
The second is morning drowsiness. The survey found snoozers reported more of it than non-snoozers, which looks like proof that snoozing makes you tired. But in the lab, half an hour of snoozing did not make people sleepier on waking. Put the two together and the direction of cause flips. Drowsy people snooze. Snoozing does not appear to make them drowsy.
The cost the study could not see plays out over months, not one morning. Every tap on an alarm that is still ringing teaches you that the sound is an opening bid. We think that is where the real damage is. The data mostly clears the dozing. What it cannot clear is a habit where the last alarm has no more authority than the first. It is why "just do not snooze" fails as advice. You are asking the half-asleep person to hold a line the awake person drew, and they have no reason to.
So, is snoozing bad?
Our position. If you set the alarm early on purpose, doze for a planned half hour, and get up at the last ring every time, you are doing what the lab did and the research says you are fine. Enjoy it.
If the last ring keeps moving, or you have ever surfaced at 8:40 with no memory of the taps, the dozing is not your problem. The dismissal is. Fixing it means making the last alarm different in kind from the ones before it. Not louder. Not more of them.
Keep the doze, move the stop
Give the two jobs to two different alarms. The soft start, if you want one, stays a normal alarm you can tap from bed. The hard stop has to end somewhere your body has to go.
The phone across the room is the free version, and it works until the phone drifts back. The version that holds is a scan target. You stick a barcode or QR code on something in the room where your morning starts, and the alarm keeps ringing until you walk there and scan it. This is what BarLock does. Set the scan alarm for the time you need to be on your feet. If you want the soft half hour before it, set a plain alarm 30 minutes earlier and snooze it with a clear conscience. The scan alarm only makes sure the half hour ends. Two alarms with two different jobs, not five copies of the same one.
Where this stops applying
Thirty-one people, one lab morning per condition, all of them habitual snoozers, all of them snoozing for about 30 minutes. The study says nothing about snoozing for an hour or about people who do not usually snooze, and it cannot say what a year of mornings does. Read "snoozing is fine" as "a planned half hour of snoozing did not hurt people who already do it", which is a narrower sentence.
And if you are snoozing because you slept five hours, no finding here helps. The snooze is the symptom. A harder alarm will get you up, and you will be up and exhausted. Move bedtime first, then worry about the button.
